Our new TV
Oct. 12th, 2010 11:35 amThe converter box I ordered for the Apple TV to me old TV came in.
Something not listed in its ads, but in its instruction manual “may do
permanent damage to CRT monitors”.
Great.
I tried it anyhow.
While it didn’t do any damage to the old TV, it didn’t exactly work either.
I then needed another converter to convert that signal to the right
resolution for the TV to accept it.
The good news is I used to have one of those. The bad news is, I have no
idea where it is now.
But, going from the Apple TV to one converter, to another converter to the
TV was starting to get a bit silly.
I found the guy at the store last weekend had “exaggerated” when he told me
the TV I needed to use the Apple TV cost $400 or more. I found one on
their web site for $250 that met the requirements. And, I had several on
line coupons that knocked it down to $200.
I really didn’t want a new TV. But, I really do want to be able to watch
movies from the computer on the TV.
So, I got it.
The good news is that it does appear to work quite well. It does
everything that was promised when I decided I wanted one two months ago.
I just wish it hadn’t required the series of hoop jumps to get here.

Date: 2010-10-12 03:43 pm (UTC)The video card has a DVI port and a digital port. It's one of the transitional video cards which has both, (and probably does both poorly).
One monitor is DVI only, the other has both.
I have the cables to theoretically plug them both in but... if you have both monitors plugged in, one will drop out or scramble the other. I've tried all the combinations I can with the cables I have.
I'm going to have a go with two DVI cables and a converter plug, if that doesn't work, I give up.

Date: 2010-10-12 08:55 pm (UTC)Oh, but I have to upgrade, because there's brand new "better" stuff. No, not in my mind. But, it's a kind of "upgrade or suffer", that's the Mac life I suppose :D
