That’s quite a resume

As I’ve gone on about some before, we’re trying to hire some additional
senior mechanical engineers at my company.
The ad we’ve run is very specific: 10+ years of experience, must have
worked on automation, must have worked on capitol equipment, must have a
strong analytical background, local applicants only.
Today I get an applicant from California a mere 2987 miles away.
First of all, I should have known when he sent me his resime.
He says he is:
“Highly trained in mechanical engineering applications for an expansive
range of industries, including tool and machine fabrication, manufacturing,
marine, automotive, aeronautics, railroad, HVAC and many others”
So, where has this highly trained person been working the last 4 years:
GOODWILL INDUSTRIES: Sales Floor Associate
OK. Times are tough. Maybe he had to work at good will because he’s been
laid off.
What about before that?
RALPHS GROCERY COMPANY: Service Deli Clerk/Courtesy Clerk
Before that?
McDONALD'S: Cashier/Cook
Of course, if you go back to the 90’s, he’s worked for both Target and
Wal-Mart.
I do feel sorry for people looking for a job. I spent more than half of
last year looking for one myself. It was very frustrating. It was very
demoralizing. It was outright draining to apply to hundreds of jobs and
get nothing back.
There have been people my boss has asked why I brought in for an interview.
I’ve told him that they were close enough to get a shot at it, even if I
didn’t think they were a great fit.
But, come on.
It is for a senior engineering position with more than 10 years of
automation experience.
How does being a salesman at a Goodwill store come close?
