I know I have written before about what my wife considers our first date 27
years ago when we went
to see Return of the Jedi together, and how I was in such a rush
to get back from NJ for that date , so won’t retell that part here.
Last night my wife and I were talking about it. How hot it was in that
rotten little apartment I had. The color and texture of the paint on the
walls. The foam rubber sofa I had inherited from my aunt. The new
apartment I was getting ready to move into that was in the building next
door with the windows facing the old place.
It’s been 27 years. But, I remember a lot about that summer, and that week
when I met my wife better then I remember last year.
One of the reasons I so often go on about how far we’ve gone together is
because I remember that time/place so well. The last 27 years have been
like a string coiling out from that fixed point in time and space. 9862
spins of the Earth, 27 times around the sun, and only 0.0000432 degrees
around the galaxy. (I can picture the helix this makes, but it crashes the
CAD system to try and draw it, so no picture. Sad.)
If you add up the miles, it comes to 135,455,002,504 which sounds like a
lot. But, if you use the orbit of Neptune to define the solar system, as
it is currently held to be the outermost planet, then we’ve only gone 1.51
solar systems together. (Neptune being 44,969,760,000 miles from the sun…)
It is sad to see that spot we met recede so slowly as it means there is no
chance we’ll make it back to see it again. 225 million years around is a
long time to wait.
But, I’m happy to be traveling with my wife. 27 years together and she is
still my favorite person in the whole world.
Now with our triple 27th anniversary passing, I’ll have to look forward to
17 years of being married in October and 10,000 days together on December
1st…
(Just as a side note, the guy who sits across the hall from me at work just
asked me if I understood the angular momentum of traveling from the north
pole to the equator and the spin rates involved. He seemed surprised I
knew the numbers off of the top of my head…)
