More adventures on the highway of "Bam!"
Jul. 3rd, 2010 10:49 pmThe rental car we've got out there is a black Chrysler Seabring with Texas plates. I don't like the way it handles, the milage it gets, the blind spots it has or much else about it. But, it does have a lot of trunk space.
Anyhow, we were driving back to the hotel from the caves and this BMW starting acting very weird around us. He'd come bombing up the high speed lane until he was just off my bumper. I'd pull into the right lane to let him past. He'd hover there for a bit, not going past me. I'd drop slower and slower trying to get him to go past, and finally he'd drop in behind me.
This kept happening over and over again. To the point when I saw him coming I'd hit the gas just to keep ahead of him. But, even with the speed limit of 70, the BWM could go faster then the Chrysler, so he'd get behind me and do it again.
We just couldn't figure out why this guy wouldn't go past me if he was willing to drive up the road at 90 and I was not.
Finally as we went along, we saw another black Seabring come into sight ahead of us. It was the same year, make, model and color as our rental car.
That section of 65 only has two lanes. I pulled up beside the second Seabring and matched his speed.
The BMW seemed very confused. He kept swapping between the two of us.
I figured what happened was he was trying to catch up with another car he was traveling with that looked like our car. When we tried to get him to go past, it confused him.
"Steve I'm following you!" I imagine him saying. "Why do you keep trying to shake me off?"
Eventually, I passed the other Seabring. The BMW pulled up to follow me. I saw the driver look into the other Seabring, hit the breaks and pull in behind him. Theory confirmed.
If only he had been willing to at least pull along side of us he would have seen we weren't "Steve".
I guess it's good he didn't follow us back to the hotel...

Then again I still love the idea of having 2-way radios...And have fun keeping track of each other while reciting lines from Star Wars et al.
