Our last show yesterday was on Italian historical combat. It wasn’t our
best show of the weekend. The rain that had been threatening for several
hours was just starting to spit at us. The coconut wouldn’t break under
the bec-de-corbin and I was getting worried I’d break the bec if I hit it
harder. I cut out some of the early Italian longsword in the hope that if
we ended the show a bit early, we could pack up before the forecast hail
reached us. And, it was the end of a long hot weekend of shows.
When we finished a woman in a gold dress came up to me. I remembered what
the faire organizer had told me: “The Events Director for the museum is
wandering around in a gold dress. Make sure she likes the show or we may
not get to come back and perform at this museum again.”
So, since it hadn’t been our best show, I was a bit worried.
“I wanted to talk to you about your show,” she said in a European accent
that confirmed for me it was the ED of the place. “I think it is fantastic
and I’m so glad that you’re here this year.”
“Oh, that’s very kind,” I said.
“When we had the meeting of managers to decide on this faire this year we
said ‘we must have Phoenix Swords’ as they are the only people who do an
educational show!”
“I’m glad you liked it,” I said. “We try to add some history into it so it
will be educational and entertaining.”
“Yes, all this other is entertaining,” she made a brushing motion towards
the rest of the faire. “But, we are a museum. We must teach people as
well. That is why we are here.”
“I understand. My wife and I have both worked for museums. And, this
historical show started at a museum where we both volunteered in their
research group.”
“Oh, you’re MUSEUM PEOPLE!” she said. “That explains it! Now I understand
everything. I am so glad you are here.”
I thanked her again, then excused myself so we could pack before the storm
really hit.

I’m glad we made a good impression. But, I feel like I need some sort of
badge or something saying “museum person”. I could collect all sorts of
badges that way.
