My wife headed out for her trip today.  I’m sure she will have a good time
and I am sad I am not able to go with her.
But, she gets 4 weeks of vacation time a year.  I get 2, and since I have
only been an official employee for 2 months, I don’t even get to use mine
until the fall at best.
Of course, over the last 24 years my wife has switched jobs half as often
as I have, so almost always ends up with more vacation time then me.
I’ve only worked at 2 places where I managed to get up to 3 weeks a year.
In both cases I was laid off less then a year after I reached that point.
I know if I had remained a consultant, I could have taken any time off I
wanted.  But then I wouldn’t get paid and I like being paid.
So I think this way is for the best.  But, it is still sad when I don’t get
to go on trips with my wife.

Disclaimer:  I am not in any way trying to invite myself along on this or
any other trip to which I have not been, or will not be invited.  I am not
in any way fishing for an invitation or anything along those lines.  I am
not in any way trying to complain about my wife getting to take nice trips
and visit her friends.  I do not begrudge her these trips, or other things
she does.
I am merely sad that I don’t get to do more fun things together with my
wife.

I certainly understand too

It can be good for you both to have a few days apart as well. When my wife goes to her mother's place to work at a fair they always do together, I am usually not able to go, and I take care of the dogs and eat fish any time I want (she won't let me cook fish in the house). It is great to do things together, but even when you cannot, it doesn't have to totally suck!

I am not saying it will totally suck either. Just that I will miss her and it would be nice if I had more time off to do trips like this. Of course last year I had all the time I could want and no money to do anything. So, I am after something in-between.

My wife also seems to think there are some foods I can cook while she is away I can not when she is there. Unlike your wife, I am not banned from cooking anything, so it isn't a problem for me. (Ane, I am not sure I want you cooking fish in my home either...)

Well, she called from her room, so that's probably where she is.
But, she did speak of looking forward to dinner...

She just called to let me know she is on the road. (She called from a rest area, not while driving.)
So, I've got the flowers, her favorite ice cream and a present waiting.

I can totally understand this frustration/disappointment as well.

Now that J had actual vacation time, I'm hoping he can one of these years do one of those "summer camp for adults" things that I've enjoyed in the past, at Haystack or Touchstone or whatever.

Unfortunately, his parents seem to think that since he has vacation time, he's obligated to spend it all visiting THEM. Argh.

ETA: Us both going isn't really an option, because of the Beasts. probably. Though Snikki could probably be kenneled, and we could get a pet-sitter to deal with the cats and the mail and newspapers, potentially...
