So, we got back my MIL's will today saying we sent it to the wrong place.
I had, of course, sent it to the place on the Mass.gov website of where to send it.
But, apparently you've got to take it to the court in person, which isn't on the site.
Of course the site, written my lawyers also says "you should get a lawyer to do that".
It is an uncontested will with almost no assets. Why, other than to help the bar association, should we pay for a lawyer?
I'm most upset because it made my wife upset.
Sad.

Ugh. I'm so sorry.

I have a fear about this myself as my father's only child and the only person IN the will and the executor of the will blah blah blah I REALLY don't want to have to get a lawyer when the time comes. Really. Good to think about. Thanks for sharing!

Uh...didn't mean to make that about me, sorry.

Hugs to your sweetie and wishes for expedient legal bullshit to you both.

No worries, I don't feel you were "making it about you" only relating to things you've felt yourself.

If any experience or advice we have makes it easier for you or someone else, then I'm happy to have helped.

Argh !

Try not to get too upset about this - it seems that many states (Vermont included) don't handle this sort of thing well and are generally oblivious to the state of mind of the people that have to go through with the legal "cleanup". MA may be different - they certainly have many more lawyers for a reason, I guess - but in the circumstances you are in, I don't think that you need an attorney, nor would one be required if you lived in VT or NH unless there were complex asset allocations, many heirs, and/or challenges to the will. IF you do foresee potential problems with relatives, or the live-in boyfriend, it might be worth a couple c-notes to engage an attorney who does this stuff every day, for a consultation. Otherwise, just try to let it roll off your back, and know that even in death, there is no escaping the long arm of governmental bureaucracy (sad).
