Financial wonders

I took this afternoon off from work to try and plow through some of the paperwork of my MIL.
I started with calling the banks to cancel the accounts. They all, very justifiably to me, said “bring the papers proving you have rights to this account, and a copy of the death certificate to one of our branches, then we’ll help you.”
I called the credit cards.
MasterCard, Visa, Discover.
All canceled the account for me without much in the way of questions.
The only one that gave me any sort of issue was the Lane Bryant one. It is a store card for a women’s clothing store. They required the death certificate and written notice to close the account. But, they let me fax that to them.
Not only did the big cards not require that, Discover asked me if I just wanted to take over the $14,000 credit limit account. They’d put it in my name if all I did was ask.
After all, I’ve got a different last name, live in a different town, and hadn’t given them any paperwork to prove I was who I said I was.
So, here, have $14,000?
Yes, I had her name, address and account number. But, I could have gotten that from raiding her mail.
Actually, that is more or less how I got it, I am just raiding her mail legally to help out the executor of her estate.
I’m glad I shred my paperwork. Not going to stop that.
