I am the noodle man!
Jul. 10th, 2009 01:22 pmMy wife asked me to come in to her work today and help her with some projector cleaning. On the way I stopped at the Chinese place near her work I like and got us lunch.
I ordered the same thing I always do.
2 orders of dumplings
2 orders of sesame noodles
There is usually a woman there taking the orders, but this time it was a man. After he gave the order to the cooks he turned back to me.
“You live here in Worcester?” he asked me.
“No, I live one town over.”
“Why do you come here?” he asked.
“You’ve got the best noodles and dumplings in town,” I said. “And, you are right next to where my wife works.”
“You are the man who orders the noodles,” he said.
“I ordered two sets of them, and dumplings,” I said.
“I have heard of the man who orders dumplings and noodles,” he said. “He has a wife that works at the college.”
“I guess that’s me,” I said.
“No one but you orders the noodles,” he said.
“They are very good,” I said.
“I make the sauce myself,” he said. “Lots of peanuts.”
The place is fairly popular and there were lots of folks coming in for orders that had been phoned it. I saw mine finish and sit there while he dealt with the phone in orders.
After a bit, he saw it and marched back to the cooking area. As he packed my food he shouted at the cooks in Chinese.
I don’t know much Chinese. But, it certainly sounded like he was berating them for not letting him know the order was ready and keeping “the noodle man” waiting.
Back in the days when we did the comic about superheroes in Worcester, I never had a noodleman. Now there is one.
Pastafarian.. eh?

I'll be the eggman.
Isn't it funny how different people view (and recognize) our interactions with theirs during the daily grind.... Oh boy, here is another order from the noodleman - he must be hungry this week and very busy, too!

"Put some fries in, here comes no salt."
So being the noodle man doesn't surprise me as much as him saying no one else orders them. They're very good. While I was there I saw 2 orders for crab rangoon, a sweet and sour chicken and a pork fried rice. Those are all pretty common. I'm sure they're good there, but go for what they're best at.

I like their noodles a lot.
I don't know anyone who doesn't like them.
But, I can not promise you will like them. Only that I do.

Date: 2009-07-11 10:18 pm (UTC)There used to be a small deli in Grafton MA (Lakeview Deli) where I'd go almost every other morning for a bulkie sammich. The husband-wife team knew nearly everyone including me by name and our 'regular' orders.
It is an experience I think is unique but special and everyone should have.
