On Perrin’s bad list

Today we set off for KY. We got up at 4:45, got ready and waited for blue_micha and perrin_o_ravnos to join us.


We squeezed into the back seat of blue_micha’s car and headed off.


Our first stop was in upstate New York.


I like the “bear” rest area.


Unless you’ve been upstate, you probably don’t think “cow” when you think New York. But, there are a lot of them.


Because of all of the rain the last two months, the rivers and canals are running very high. But, still below the level of the road.


All roads lead to Rome. Just the way it is.


Buffalo has plastic buffalos. Just the way it is.


This car carried the 4 of us for the 15 hour trip.


We didn’t get too many tailgaters. Maybe they could see the swords?


I thought Fredonia was a country, not a stop on the New York Thruway.


That’s a great lake. Really great.


The New York Thruway is the only highway I know that has its own jet fighters.


Apparently we not only have Fredonia and Rome, but the home of Alexander the Great as well.


I’m not sure what to say about this, other than I made many attempts to get a picture of it and I’m allergic to milk products.


Along route 71 in Ohio we saw a police officer on average every 5 miles. 210 miles. That’s a lot of cops.


Most of them were speed traps.


One guy was having the cuffs put on. Don't know why...

The weather was mostly cloudy, some rain and a few bright glimpses of sun.


Shouldn’t we do our historical show here?


We don’t know what this was. But, it was in Columbus and really big.


After Columbus, we stopped for dinner at a Chinese place on the side of the road.
They had a strange item on the menu.


Their mascot is a three legged dragon, so I guess that goes with the bacon wrapped with an egg on top shrimp dish.


They did make very nice carrot phoenix garnishes for most of us.


After that, I got out and walked.


But, I got back in at the gas station across the street.

There are vast tracks of Ohio where even the GPS doesn’t think there is anything there.


Just to compare with other spots.


Then, we crossed a bridge and were in Kentucky.


It was a nice sunset.


I was happy to get to the hotel and get my feet out from under the chair and over the bucklers.


When we got to the hotel, we found that we had 2 reservations. One from Orbitz and one from Hotels.com.
I had used both services to look at room prices. Orbitz won on price, so I booked through them. (By a whopping 1.2%, but still...)
However, Hotels.com apparently put through a reservation based on my looking at the room, even though I did not push the final “book room” button or get a confirmation email about it.
So, once in the room I spent a fair bit of time on the phone with them, then for some reason their Spanish language help line, before I got someone who agreed to give me my money back. So, it all worked out. (Do I think they put me into the Spanish to drive me away? Maybe. But, the woman who finally answered was totally fluent in English so it wasn’t a problem. My Spanish is very rusty, so probably for the best. I have to admit, I had wondered at their choice of hold music. It’s better than on the English line.)

perrin_o_ravnos drove the whole 15 hours. While doing so, there were 7 drivers who earned his wrath. I won’t go into why other than to say: on a two lane road, don’t drive the same speed as the guy in the other lane.

Anyhow, these are the 7. You’d have to ask him why.

I know that bridge! And I've traveled that stretch in Covington, ick. All that time and only 7 drivers got wrath? wow... And on a holiday weekend... I'd have had a lot more, lol.

You forget, you have to WORK to impress us. And locals were offended that we *fell* to the 7th worst drivers in the nation here near Boston!

Maybe they were keeping with you as they were trying to figure out what the swords were all about? No excuse, but possible. :P

Where in NY Thruway is that F-94 Starfire on display? Although it looks like the nose says "PA AIR GUARD" Is that a Veteran's cemetery? That's pretty cool though.

Now having seen it on the way back, it is in the 40 miles of PA we drove through near Erie.
