Book questions from [livejournal.com profile] cissa

1. Do you prefer to read hardcover or paperback books?
The main thing is the story. If I want to read the story, I’ll read it either way I can get it.
Usually if I’m looking forward to it coming out, I’ll get the hardcover rather than wait the year or so for the paperback. But, if it is an author I’ve been disappointed by in the past, or am uncertain of, I’ll wait for the less expensive paperback.
I do generally think of hardcovers as being worth more, even if I don’t like the story, and try and treat them better. Paperbacks are more disposable.
If I’m traveling I prefer paperbacks as they take less space.

2. Do you have a favorite place to read in your home?
I usually read in bed before going to sleep. But, I am willing to read almost anywhere if I’ve got the time.

3. Do you have a favorite place to read away from, or outside of, your home?
I like to read in the courtyard of our apartment building. It’s very nice, grass covered with a few trees and a stream running through it. But, the reality is, I usually stay in the apartment to read.

4. Do you snack while you read?
Not usually.

5. Do you tend to mark your books as you read, or does the idea of writing in books horrify you?
It horrifies me.

6. How do you keep your place while reading a book? Bookmark? Dog-ears? Laying the book flat open?
I use a bookmark 90% of the time. If I’m putting it down for a very sort time, I’ll lay it open.

7. Fiction, Non-fiction, or both?
Both.

8. Hardcopy or audiobooks?
When I used to have a 90 minute commute, I did a lot of audiobooks. I still do a few. But, I prefer reading hardcopy.

9. Are you a person who tends to read to the end of chapters, or are you able to put a book down at any point?
I usually read to a chapter point as that is where the author intended there to be a break. But, if something comes up, I usually just stop where I am. Often, when reading in bed, I’ll stop when I start to fall asleep.

10. If you come across an unfamiliar word, do you stop to look it up right away? Write it down to look it up later? Just try to infer what it means from the rest of the sentence, and keep going?
I’ll only stop if I can’t understand what the point of the sentence is without that word. If I still know, or at least think I know, what is being said, I’ll keep going.

11. What are you currently reading?
Terry Brooks “Knight of the Word” series. Started book 3 last night.

12. What is the last book you bought?
I have no idea. I live across the street from a book store and often buy books I am interested in when I see them and put them in the queue. They don’t stay in order well as I pull out the one that looks most interesting when I want one, so it’s hard to say when they got there.

13. What is your all time favorite book?
Don’t know. I like a lot of books.

14. Are you the type of person that only reads one book at a time or can read more than one at a time?
I often have more than one book going at a time. But, there will be a main book and an alternate. Often of different subject. I might have a fiction and non-fiction going at the same time and read the one I feel most interested in at the time.

Do you like re-reading books? Yes, but only books I liked. I’ll often grab a book I liked and open it to my favorite part and start re-reading.
