Ghosts of toys past
May. 20th, 2026 03:43 pmOne of my mother’s favorite ways to punish me was to find something I wanted and give it to my brother.
There was always the claim “you can both play with it”.
This extended to thinks like walkie-talkies where, rather than give us each one, she’d give my brother a pair. Then, he could decide if he felt like sharing with me. Often not.
The TV shows I liked back then, and still do now, tended to be science fiction shows like Doctor who, UFO or Space 1999. I suspect anyone reading this knows them, but just in case:

My brother like shows more like Sha Na Na:

Not a lot of Sha Na Na toys. Some music, but not toys.
My shows had toys.
But, my brother got them, not me.
I didn’t get zero of them as my sister would usually split the toys she bought between my brother and me, and my sister paid for my navigation skills in toys when she wanted to go shopping.
And, my mother did give me plenty of toys. Just not the ones I wanted most.
There was one Space 1999 one that was the Eagle transporter. It was huge. As long as my brother was tall at the time. Could be taken apart and put back together in different configurations. Had lots of accessories and such.
One in a while he let me play with it.
So, almost half a century later, someone is making it again.

Stupid expensive. Almost a meter long, so would take up a huge amount of space.
Nothing I even vaguely need it for.
Even my webcomic I use to justify toy robots would not need a huge, stupid expensive, space ship.
It would just sit around my spare room, with a ton of other junk, and gather dust.
I have no intention of buying it.
But, I can’t deny there is part of me that wants to.
Part that says “sure, it’s expensive, but you’ve got a good job. You’re paying more than double that for the hotel rooms for your sword troupe this weekend…”
IF it wasn’t the size of a piece of furniture, I might give in. But, not with something this huge.
Tempting through it is…

Date: 2026-05-20 10:37 pm (UTC)There are times I still regret letting a few boxes of toys my brother and I had go away when my folks & brother moved out to PNW 13 years ago.
But, what would I have done with them, where would I have put them, etc.
