Hear no evil, see no evil, eat the turkey
May. 13th, 2026 01:53 pmAt the sword symposium last month two of the folks who used to be in the sword research group with us 25 years ago heard I was working in Cambridge these days and suggest we get together for lunch as they are also in that area.
We talked about a place near the T station next to where I work, but then one of them suggested another place.
“Didn’t you work near here back in the 90’s and like a small sandwich shop on Broadway?” He asked.
“Yes, they had great food. I used to love getting my lunches there.”
“Why don’t we meet there instead?”
“Sure, sounds great! I’ve got to meet at 11:30, so I can be back by 1.”
“11:30 at the sandwich shop,” the three of us agreed.
So, 11:27 I walked into the sandwich shop and looked around. No other customers.
I waited the 3 minutes and then ordered their turkey dinner special and sat in one of the 3 chairs they have for customers.
At 11:33 my lunch was ready. I paid for it, and began to eat it.
A man I didn’t know came in, sat in one of the chairs and expressed regret he didn’t order what I was eating.
At 11:40, my phone rang. It was the one who had suggested the sandwich shop.
“When was I supposed to meet you?” He asked.
“10 minutes ago. Don’t worry, I ordered anyhow and am having a nice lunch,” I said.
That one sent out a message saying “I’m here at the place by the T station and don’t see either one of you!”
The first hung up with me to call the second.
I finished my lunch and went back to the office.
We agreed to try it again in 2 weeks.
We’ll see how it goes.
