Today was day 1 of the Buck’s county faire: https://www.bucksrenfaire.com
It’s been a rough go for a lot of folks.
We were originally going to have 8 people for it and I booked 2 rooms for 4 each.
Then Ian said he and his son couldn’t go as his car was bad, Liz twisted her ankle and Tom’s car broke down. The other family that was on the fence about it gave a no as their son just started school.
Me, my wife and Robin were all that was left.
Then, Tom got his car fixed and was going to join us again.
Friday after work my wife and I set off. We were about half way when Tom called to say his car was dying and he and Robin were stuck by the side of the road in Connecticut.
We were only 10 miles behind them, and caught up with them Tom decided to try and get home with his wonky car, so we hurriedly made room for Robin in our well stuffed one and set back off.
I had already paid for the rooms and it was past the refund point, so Robin gets her own room and my wife and I get our own room. Sadly this is using up about 100% of our pay for the job. I didn’t mind it for 8 performers, but wish I knew it was going to happen this way for 3 and could have save some money.
But, the three of us made it before midnight when the hotel needs “special procedures” to check in. At the desk they said they just say that to stop people from planning on getting there at 2AM.
This is the first year for the faire at this location. There are bumps in the road. The places they planned to put folks, including us, had to be changed last minute. And, there were lots of other site problems that had the organizers worked up. But, it all worked out.
Our shows when well and were surprisingly well received. I’m not complaining about that. We’re doing the educational show, which is my favorite. And, I’m very happy to have people come up and ask meaningful questions at the end and want to know more about the books, sources and references.
I’m just not used to it unless we’re doing the show at a university or museum.
As it was just the three of us, it was a busy day. Of the more than 100 folks who have performed with us, we are in spots 1, 2 & 4 for greatest number of shows. (Tom was 3.) So, it is the most experienced group we could hope for.
But, it is still a lot for the three of us.
The hotel has a Mexican restaurant out front, so we ate there at the end of the day and all turned in early.
Two more shows this weekend as it is a 3 day weekend.
Then drive home after the show Monday to be at work 7AM Tuesday.
And, we have a smaller show next Saturday.
I guess I can sleep late a week from tomorrow…
