The remains of the ice storm
Dec. 13th, 2008 10:48 pmWe did a show for the Toys for Tots people today. It was at our practice grounds, which is usually only a 20 minute drive for us.
But, there were still so many trees down, that it took us more than an hour. (Mostly because our usual road was closed without any sort of detour signs and we took one back road after another looking for a way to get into Clinton. As far as we can tell, every major road was closed at some point.)
To give you an idea of the scope of this, this is a shot of the town square in Shrewsbury.

You can see all the white marks of broken branches.
It was very strange how the ice melted. On the north side of the road, where the sun in the south could hit, there was no ice and everything was dry.
On the south side of the road, all was still totally covered in ice. This was true on pretty much every road we were on. It seemed that no matter where you drove, you were on the boarder between ice and forest.
Still a good crowd showed up for the show. We had one young lad who insisted on helping and had a major meltdown when he was told he couldn’t be part of the show. But, we left him be the assistant wolf in the Boy who Cried Wolf, and he seemed happy with that.
(He did worry me a LOT when he ran towards our fight to try and pick up my dropped hat. He was VERY lucky he didn’t get hit.)
We’ve practiced at Hoops for a few years now. Most of the people there are regular Hoops customers. But, it really seems like they hadn’t a clue we had been sword fighting in the back room for years.
Weird.
But, a lot of toys were collected. People seemed to have a good time.
On the way home, the major roads were open!
