I’m afraid I’m going to say no to that…

The doorbell rang this afternoon. Thinking it was a package, I hit the buzzer and made my way down the stairs.
Instead of the delivery person running for their van to get away, there was a woman in the foyer.
“I’m here to offer you free carpet cleaning,” she said. “My people will come in and clean three places of high traffic area in your home.”
“Why?”
“What do you mean, why?”
“Why do you want to clean my carpet for free?”
“It’s a promotional thing,” she said, and handed me a flyer showing someone cleaning a carpet. The name of the company was not clear, and there was no phone number on it.
“I don’t think so.”
“It’s a dry foam! So, since it is hot and humid out it won’t make your carpets damp!”
“I’m allergic to a lot of stuff, so that doesn’t sound better to me.”
“Hey, I have asthma and it’s good for me!”
“I’m going to stick with no. I’ll show your brochure to my wife and see if she wants it. If so, we’ll be in touch.”
“IT HAS TO BE TODAY!”
“What?”
“This offer is only for today! We won’t offer it any other time!”
“No.”
“You wanted to ask your wife! Wives love it when you get the carpets cleaned for them!”
“No. My wife might want clean carpets, but not as much as she doesn’t want strangers in her house.”
“OK, then I’ll try your neighbors,” she said, grabbing back her brochure.
I closed the foyer door and heard it latch, then went back upstairs as I heard her punch other folks doorbells.
Now, maybe I’m paranoid, but I’ve never heard a promotion like this.
Let strangers in your house and they’ll clean your carpet for free, but only today.
When I said no, there was no “keep our company in mind for your other needs!” and forcing a brochure to me. Instead it was taken back.
I’m not saying this is a scam to look at see what folks have inside their homes so they can come back later and steal things.
But, I still don’t want these folks in my house.
If they had said “we’ll clean 3 rooms for the price of 2!” Or “free cleaning today if you sign up for weekly cleanings!”
But, “we just want to clean your floors for promotional reasons” with doing any promoting?
No, that’s just to fishy for me.
Maybe they pay attention to the folks who don’t answer their doorbells. I don’t know.
Maybe I need to break out my own carpet cleaner now, but I think that’s the better option…
