A bothersome dream

I dreamed I was in Shanghai for business. I don’t remember the exact details, but I had gone to a big meeting, it had gone well, and I went back to the hotel feeling good about how it had gone.

The hotel was an older one and had a very ornate, carved wood, lobby with a marble floor.
For the elevator, I was told to stand in one corner of the lobby. It was an open platform elevator and that section of the floor lifted up and went up through holes in the floor above me until I got to my floor.
Some of the floors of the hotel were large and open and had very nice layouts. One was an indoor park. One was some sort of arcade. One was open looking down on the others.
Being in an open platform I had a very nice view of it all.

My meeting had finished early, so I decided to go swimming. I changed into my bathing suit, took one of the robes provided and headed down to the pool, which was on a lower level.

On my way back to the pool I took out my camera for the elevator ride. I took lots of photos as the elevator rose up into the air. I was careful not to get too close to the edge as there was nothing to stop you from getting hit as it went through floors above you.

As we got close to my floor, which was pretty high in the building, the elevator stopped quickly and gave a shudder.
I jumped to get off on the floor we had reached, and the platform fell away below me.

I managed to catch the edge of the floor and hold on as I could hear the platform speed away below me.
I heard a great crash and explosion of glass as it hit the lobby and crashed.

I managed to pull myself up onto the floor and looked down through the hole. I could see, far below, where the platform hit and lots of damage from it.

I climbed down the stairs to the lobby. When I got there, I found lots of broken glass all over the floor. But, I still walked over to the front desk.
There were three men there who were watching a video of me jumping off the platform, holding onto the edge and then pulling myself up. It clearly was from a security camera at the hotel and they had several different angles of it repeating over and over.
"Wow, that’s guys lucky to be alive," one said.
"Yes, I agree," I said.
They turned to look at me.

"We are very happy for you!" the one with the manager name tag said. "We were going to send someone up to see if you are OK!"
"I think I’m OK, but had quite a shock," I said. "I think I’d like to go to a doctor and make sure I’m really OK."
"That’s a good idea!" the manager said. "We will take care of that!"
"I’d also like to be moved to a room closer to the ground," I said. "One that isn’t hard to reach by the stairs."
"We can do that!"
"I’d like you to have someone else move my things as I am not up to those stairs right now."
"I will call someone right now!" he said and went into a room behind the front counter.

One of the other people slid a two page piece of yellow paper in front of me. It was in English, not Chinese, so I could read it.
"This is the accident report," he said. "Please sign it for us."

I looked it over. The front page had a bunch of boxes about accidents, their cause and the results. The second page was mostly longer descriptions of the items.
The three boxes checked were:
The customer’s actions are not what resulted in this accident
There were no injuries to any people
The customer is happy with the changes made to our systems

"I’m not ready to sign this," I said.
"Why not?" the one who gave it to me asked.
"I’m not at all sure I haven’t been injured," I said. "It was quite a shock and there is a lot of adrenaline going through me right now. I have no idea what I’ll feel when it wears off."
"You look good to me boss," he said.
"I know I got hurt," I said.
I held up my arms that were all scrapped up from climbing out of the elevator shaft. I pointed to my feet that were bleeding from the glass on the floor.
"That’s not a real injury," he said.
"But, there might be more. I think I should see a doctor and make sure."
"Right, right," he said, pointing to the form. "Those two names at the bottom are doctors we want you to see. You’ve got an appointment to see them Friday."
"I’d like to see them now, not wait a few days."
"You know how hard it is to get a doctor’s appointment in Shanghai?" he asked. "It’s worse than New York City. You’re lucky it is only a few days!"
"I’m very worried about what the shock of this might do to me," I said. "I don’t want to wait a few days to find out. Make me an appointment now!"
"I’ll see what I can do," he said and went off to the back room.

I pointed at the third guy there.
"Get me a copy of this video," I said, pointing to the tape of me climbing out of the shaft that was still running on loop.
"You can download it from Youtube," he said.
"No. You will get me a copy right now. Of all cameras and in some sort of format my devices can read."
"Oh, all right," he said and walked off.

I waited for them to come back.

I have no idea what this dream is about. I almost never have dreams of falling. And, have never had one of an elevator dropping like this before.
The hotel is a variation on the hotel that shows up in many of my dreams. It seems that any time one of my dreams needs a hotel, it is this same hotel that is used.
The closest I’ve ever been to it in person was the Opryland hotel and resort in Nashville, which does have indoor gardens, shopping malls, and boat rides. In the dream it is more vertical than horizontal, but the inside looks much the same.
I haven’t been there since 1997, but I guess it made an impression.

One of the things that makes this dream very unusual is I almost never worry about my health in a dream.
Even dreams I’ve had where I was fighting things and got hurt, I don’t argue with people about being brought to the doctors.

I have to admit, a dream of things falling away underneath me and my needing medical attention are not things I want to wake up to on the morning where we are going to start sword practice for the year.

But, maybe that shows I’m worried about it…

You are feeling like you have lost control, like you failed or need to let go. But, the fact that you hung on and climbed out can be looked as a positive. That you have found the right path, but still fear you are just putting a " band-aid" on the problem. By questioning the clerks and refusing to sign, you are not giving up, but need more answers.
Yeah, I say this dream is about practice and the sword troupe.
But this is just my own interpretation. Others will read things differently.

Dreams are fantastic!
I love it when I remember my dreams, it's like watching a really detailed acid trip, better than any tv show LOL

It's interesting you have the same hotel in your dreams. Most of my dreams are about me moving and me investigating my new area or house or apt. They are all very trippy and never even close to a normal, real life place.

There are several reoccurring places in my dreams.
They aren't always playing the same part in the dreams, but they are the same.

There is only one shopping mall in my dreams, even if it can represent a great number of them. (The Dedham mall near where I grew up as it looked in the 70's.)
There is only one hotel. (As described above.)
There is only one path through the hills. (Blue Hill reservation, SW of Boston.)

It's like having regular actors who portray different parts.

Does it seem almost comforting because no matter what crazy things happen, there is always familiar things around?

I'm not sure comforting is the right word as sometimes bad things happen there in the dreams.
But, it is certainly familiar. So, I think it is more my brain saying "you know this background so you can concentrate on the main action".
