Wednesday night we picked up the rental van and brought it back to our
place for packing.

Because we were short one person and had a big can, we got everything in
without having to strap things to the roof of either car.

This was a good thing.

Car #1 set off in a bit of a storm.

In terms of storms we’ve had this winter, it wasn’t too bad. But, it was
still a lot for driving 1300 miles/2000 km. Especially as the storm
covered about half of that area.

Some states, like New Jersey, are low on snow removal equipment and press
other types of vehicles into service.

Maybe they aren’t the best at clearing the roads…

I was in car #2. We left 7 hours after car #1. The storm was much less by
then and we could actually see New York City as we drove past.

Because of the road salt our cars turned quite white.

I was surprised to find that the late night gas stations sell alcohol. I’m
not sure I want to share the road with people drinking “Mad Dog 20/20”…

Sadly, at some point in the night, car #1 missed it’s turn onto route 85
and continued south on 95.
This meant that by the time they reached Florida they were 450miles/700km
too far east.
They had left early, so they had time to drive across the top of Florida to
get where they were going.

My wife had made sandwiches for both cars for dinner. We didn’t eat ours
until quite late at night.
We drove all night, only stopping once the sun was coming up for some
breakfast.

I gave up driving at the start of North Carolina. I crawled into the back
most seat and got what rest I could.

The giant peach is undergoing renovation and was almost unrecognizable.

On the Georgia boarder the road stopped. Just stopped. For an hour or so
we only went 4 miles.
When we got to the problem we found a truck had gone off the road in a very
nasty way and spread what it was carrying all over the highway. They
brought in another truck to carry the stuff away.

This made us late enough to get some of the traffic in Atlanta. We only
lost about ½ hour there, which is better than some trips.

Soon we were on the highway of “Bam!”:

We seemed to be the only salty car in Alabama.

Car #1 did finally reach the faire, only a few hours before car #2.

We were going through the big flat areas north of Pensacola.

We got there and had things set up just about the time the sun went down.

Then, a nice dinner at a diner.

My wife was very happy she hit Waze royalty for her Waze app she uses on
the road.

I love your photo essays of your travels - it's always so interesting. And wow - what a change in the weather. Was it hard to drive back toward that snow and cold after feeling warm for a few days?

It was a big change. But, a nice change.

When we came back, the good weather followed. It was 15 out yesterday!
