Taxes done!

Yesterday I got the last of our tax information in the mail, so finished up
our taxes. By this morning I have received notice that they have been
accepted for the Federal and State income divisions.
So, I’m done with it for the year.
Yay!

Yay! Good work! I'm going to try to do mine this weekend, so they don't hang over my head week after week. It's better to just get it done and out of the way.

How does that work?

Do you have to save up all year ready for how much tax you think you have to pay?

If you work for a company they take it out of your paycheck every time you are paid based on an estimated formula. You get a penalty if it is too low, so everyone has a little bit more than needed taken out just to be sure. Then, once the year is over you put in your paperwork and get the extra back. Of course, if you guessed wrong you've got to pay more. You have until April to pay them.

If you work for yourself it is different. 4 times a year you've got to make a guess as to what it should be and send them a check. They give you a formula to calculate it, which is horribly wrong. 6 years ago when I did some work on my own I tried their formula and it had me pay $10,000 less than I should have. It is a good thing I said "that can't be right or everone would work for themselves all the time" and kept the money ready to pay at the end of the year. But, I still had to pay the penalty, even though I did exactly what their instructions said to do.
