Chasing the wild iPhone

My wife’s iPhone has gotten old. Too old to update to the new OS.
So, she wanted to get a new one.
No rush. What she had was fine.
On a whim, today I checked to see if any of the local stores had one less than a week after they were released.
There was one. Only 9 miles from where I worked.
So, I called my wife made sure she did really want one. She did.
I set off.
I was worried it would still be there when I got there, so while waiting at a traffic light I pulled out my iPhone and ordered it.
I got to the store and asked for it.
"You’re not on our record," the guy told me. "Did you have an email from us confirming it?"
I checked. I did not.
I checked the email order and found I had not picked the "pick up in store" option.
It was set to mail on to us some time before the end of next month.
Not what I wanted.
So, I cancelled that order and tried to put in a new one to pick up.
But, I had to wait for the old order to clear.
While I did, I asked for help from the folks in the store.
"We’ll send someone over to help you," I was told.
As I waited, the old order cleared and I could put in a new order. As I worked on this I heard "Hey, we do have one in stock! I’ll get it for you!"
And, my phone confirmed that there was no longer one for me.
There was one in the next closest store to me in New Hampshire.
As I put in my order for that one, they sent someone over to help me.
"I"m afraid we don’t have one any more," she told me. "You can check again tomorrow, they deliver new ones every day."
I hit "buy" on my phone.
"Thank you for the help," I said. "I’m sure I’ll get one eventually."
The good news was in the time this took me, most of the north bound traffic had died off.
So, I got to the other store (driving back past my office at the half way point) fairly quickly.
They had it. They brought it out.
"You have to promise me you won’t use this to hack into some place like the CIA or NSA," the guy told me. "Will you promise not to do that?"
"Never again," I said. "Once you’ve been through that NSA lie detector test you never want to do it again."
He looked at me. He checked my ID again.
"That’s not the answer most people give when I ask that," he told me.
"Can I have the phone now?"
He gave it to me.
I drove past work again and brought it home to my wife and she made cookies.
