After we got home from our friends last night, my ankle decided it had enough and was going to stop working.
It does this from time to time.
I’ve had various level of joint problems since I was a teenager, and it has been a long time since then.
This ankle, my right, seems to have a particular grudge against me.
I don’t think it was the time I gave it second degree burns by filling my shoes and socks with boiling corn chowder. After all, it isn’t like I enjoyed that either.
I think it was that time in the winter of 2000.
We were going to a party at the home of someone I didn’t really like. But, we were in that other sword troupe that proceeded the one we started on our own, and there was a big holiday party there.
As the party went on, it began to snow. A lot.
So, we decided to go home early.
The house we were at for the party was at the top of a hill with a long S shaped driveway that came up the hill.
As we went to leave, we saw someone coming up the hill.
They clearly were not good at driving in the snow on a hill at night and were fishtailing all over the driveway.
I didn’t think I would be able to get past them as they did that, so got out to give them a push.
As I walked to the lip of the hill down to them I encountered a problem.
There was a fairly deep hole that in the storm had filled with water and snow. Because of that, it looked just like the rest of the road that was covered in wet snow.
So, I had no warning when my foot hit it sideways and twisted hard to the right.
I did my best to go with it and not put my considerable weight on my critically bent ankle.
This resulted in what my wife describes as my jumping up in the air, spinning around twice, landing on my face and sliding down the hill at the car I was going to help.
It’s rather more of a blur for me, but I do agree about sliding down the hill on my face right into the headlights of the car coming up the hill.
They did stop and decide they didn’t want to drive up the hill after all.
So, they didn’t run me over.
But, that did quite the job on my ankle. It swelled up something fierce and was difficult to walk on for a couple of weeks.
These days it will remind me of that night every so often. And, last night was one of those times.
Usually its riding my bike that does it. But, I guess swimming for a few hours was enough.
Ah well, lacking a time machine there isn’t much I can do about it now.
(My Tardis key has been acting up lately, but I still haven’t found the door to match it.)

Date: 2014-07-14 01:20 pm (UTC)Drive to Boston.
Walk across half of Logan airport
Sit in a bad position for 3 hours
Walk across the Atlanta airport
Drive for another hour or more
Wine and dine some suppliers.
Then, rest.
But, I appreciate the thought...

Date: 2014-07-16 07:59 pm (UTC)He was working at the college food service and accidentally poured a boiling pot of corn chowder onto his foot, most of the burns were inside the shoe since he couldn't remove it fast enough-there were "kernel marks" on his foot for years. It was a super-nasty burn.

A few hours swimming around a lake seemed to confuse it.
