We were supposed to go over to a friends house tonight and research the Liancour sword manual from 1692. (On line free here: http://www.umass.edu/renaissance/lord/pdfs/Liancour_1692.pdf Translations can be found various places around the internet if you're interested. But, this one has the pictures.)

But, she was off at a city planning meeting and running late. Her son let us in, so we sat around her dining room for an hour going through the manual while her son was upstairs getting ready for his 19th century dance.

It was a bit strange to me to be left alone in someone else's house to do sword research. Granted, we've known them for many years and done a lot of sword research together. But, still a bit strange.

When she got out of her meeting we did go though the first 3 chapters of the manual. Next week, we'll start #4.
Hopefully it will go a bit smother next time...

Dou you and your wife read French? 33 years ago I could have translated a fair amount of that, but the language brain has gotten too muddied over the years. Makes me wish I kept up with a second language..... although now, instead of French, I have a hankering to learn Italian and Chinese.

Oh no. The only language I speak fluently is frankspeak, and I've never met anyone else who knows it.
I manage in English, but only due to 50 years of practice.
No French at all. I downloaded one of the translations I found on the internet.

19th century dance? O: I didn't know that was a hobby/interest (though I shouldn't be surprised). Do you have any more information about it?

Commonwealth Vintage Dancers is the group that the son is dancing with
http://www.vintagedancers.org

the late founding member, Patri, was one of the founding members of what became the Sword Guild that Fbhjr and I became members of around 2001 and did demos until 2006ish. Patri was also instrumental in providing scans and facsimile copies of a huge amount of the fencing (and dance) manuals people around the world have been using since the mid 1990's

I too feel weird when I'm at someone else's home. Oddly enough, I've spent some time at their house and their cottage on the Cape
although also for a short bit of time.

The more awkward one was at the former Ed. Director of that museum's house during a midday weekend party a few years ago
where we were all pretty wiped out and she let me take a nap on their couch, when I woke up no one was around; they had migrated outside, and it
took me a few minutes to figure out where they'd gone…
