Last day of that job

The message on the company news page on the website today summed up how I felt about my last day at work.

I know they were saying they wish the best for those of us who resigned. But, I think I am leaving behind a lot of resigned employees.
When reviewing my 4.61 years at the company I realized one important fact:
All three locations of the company where I worked required my turning left at a double wide left turn lane to reach.

OK, maybe that isn’t a big deal. But, it’s what I’ve got.
They had a goodbye lunch for me and the head of software today. His last day is tomorrow.
We went to the chain steakhouse near the office. Not my favorite place to eat in the area, but I’ve been to worse places too.
Laconic Bob, who has worked with me for my whole time here, made a joke that when I gave out my personal contact information I’d probably do it on cards that had the info for my sword troupe on the back.
When I handed him my card later in the day he turned it over and saw the Phoenix Swords information.
"I’m not even surprised," he said.
"You thought you were joking, didn’t you?" I asked.
"Should have known better," he said.
The head of the division told me how much I’d be missed and that I was always welcome back.
The head of HR told me that I was one of the best employees he’s ever dealt with.
When I hesitated in replying to his question about if anyone at the company was a problem to work with he said "You can say you hate My Favorite Martian, the head of marketing, everyone does. I hate him too."
"I don’t think he is bad a person," I said. "But, he is hard to work with as everything seems to become an argument with him."
"I think he’s a bad person," the HR guy said. "I hate the whole Swiss office. They make my life miserable."
My intern made me cookies and wrote me what she said was a "goofy note". But, I thought it was very nice.

On my way out I saw that My Favorite Martian was visiting from Switzerland.
I said goodbye to him and let him know that I thought working with him was a challenge.
He looked like he was starting to argue.
"Because you set high standards," I said.
"Ja," he said. "I had not known you were leaving. Good luck."
The head of the division was sitting behind him when I said this.
He broke out in a smile.
"We’ll miss you, Frank," he said.
I start the new job Monday. Until then I’ve got two sword shows this weekend.
So, I guess for these 4 days performing sword fights is my major source of income.
Good thing I gave out those cards.

Date: 2014-05-29 11:27 am (UTC)I'm glad to hear so many thought you were a good person and surprised/disappointed you were leaving.
Last days are interesting in how people/coworkers reveal how they really felt about you.
Good luck at the new place, and good luck this weekend!

Date: 2014-05-29 04:18 pm (UTC)A new week, and new month, and a new job - all aligning nicely.
I am sure that they will miss you - more than you know - at the old place.
I hope that the commute doesn't prove to be a bothersome one for you.
Maybe you will end up with a carpooling, buddy?
