Fat people in heat
Jun. 7th, 2008 11:01 pmPaladin faire.
That’s not what it is called. It has never been called that. But, it is the faire put on by the guy who does The Paladin Knight.
When we started Phoenix, his show was the 5th we ever did. And, one of those first 4 was a birthday party for one of our member’s family. So he’s been with us for a long time. (We’ve done about 175 jobs since.)
We’ve had some ups and downs with him over the years, but he is a nice enough guy who hires us year after year.
He show is about 4 hours from home. We needed to be there by 9.
We made it. It was a long, tired drive at that time of the morning, but we got there.
He used to have his shows in the fall. The first year was so cold I thought I was going to freeze in the tent at night. I slept with a puppet on my hand to keep warm, and wondered what people would think when they found my frozen body.
No such worries this year. Out of all those jobs we’ve done, this broke the record for the hottest job we’ve ever done. 94F at least. In the sun, sword fighting.
Most of us are not small people either. That’s how we came up with the term “Fat people in heat” to describe how we felt.
Anyhow, there were 7 of us there.

Even the watermelon was happy to be there.

We did our shows and they went well.

But, it was very hot.

Between shows we did little more than sit around and try and keep cool.

Some people however seemed to manage to make themselves a princess. At least to me, the flag behind her looked like a princess hat as she stood there.

One of my “duties” at this faire is to do the pillow joust. Stand on a thin beam and not get knocked off with pillows. This year my wife joined in to try and get me knocked off. She was pretty good at it. I tend to let the kids win. I didn’t have to let anything happen with her.

We drove back to the hotel and showered. I found we had forgotten the hair brush. I’m told it gave me an anime look.

Once the faire was over, the real problem began. Where to eat dinner. We followed Tom’s GPS to a VERY snooty looking place on the banks of a river near a nice waterfall.

I decided we couldn’t afford to eat there and we needed to find another place. Pat helped by asking the local police and then trying to describe what he said.

We got lost. And, thunderstorms were moving in.

We did finally find a barbeque place that was very good. We had to sit in the bar as it was crowded, but the food was very nice.

I liked it because it had pinball.

You could tell I was tired, I only managed to win 2 free games. But, it was still fun.
After a few more adventures in navigation in rural New Jersey, we managed to get to the hotel.
Tomorrow, more fat people in heat as we do day two. It is forecast to be even hotter, and we’re going to be driving the 4 hours home instead of coming to a hotel for a shower. I’ll be VERY tired when we get home.

Date: 2008-06-08 08:32 pm (UTC)I was in Reading PA at the WW2 Airshow, it was about 105 degrees on the airfield, and at least 35-40 people, including a few dozen reenactors, fell from the heat. I'm sure the hopsital was thrilled...And the event site ran out of an entire trailer-ful of ice by midday. Bad news for today.
Decided to just call Saturday the day and head back today. Make sure you gas up in NJ first - I was forced to pay 4.29 in RI somewhere (dropping off a buddy who came with me)
