Haunted by quality of jobs past
Nov. 23rd, 2013 10:14 pmWhen I was at the Toyota dealership this morning, I couldn’t help but notice their furniture.
My job, back before I was designing giant robot freezers, was designing furniture. (Before they laid me off and I was out of work for most of a year until I got the giant robot gig.) And, the dealership has some of the office furniture I designed.

But, it is put together wrong with bad parts. The hinges on this cabinet door should not be showing.

It is supposed to make an arc starting at the top, not hang down like this.

And it is really not supposed to have one high and one low like this.

It is very inconsistent. Sometimes good one one side and bad on the other.

So, when my car was done and I was asked if I had any questions, I answered:
“Why haven’t you called your dealer to get this fixed?” I asked. “Don’t let them tell you it should look like this! I designed these parts and they should look like this good one, not this bad one! Those hinges are imported from China at less than $10 each. Call up the company you bought them from and get new ones.”
This seemed to confuse the car repair customer service person, but it made the cashier bust out laughing.
“I thought they looked bad like that,” she said to me. “But, they said it was supposed to be that way.”
“They lied,” I said. “They didn’t want to do the warrantee repair work.”
“I know how that is,” she said.
I bet she does.
