There was a solar eclipse this morning that should have been just visible from where I am at dawn before the moon’s shadow rushed off across the Atlantic towards Africa.
So, I got up at my normal time for work and drove off to a shopping area on top of a hill not too far from here.

A security person came over to make sure I wasn’t there for nefarious purposes. But, when I assured her I was just there in the hopes of seeing an eclipse rise she went on her way.

Sadly, it was very cloudy. So, when the sun rose all I saw was brighter clouds, not the eclipse.

Ah well. I’m thinking if I want to see an eclipse I should set my sites on the one in 2017.

I’ll grant you the closest the totality will be from my home is about 1000 miles. But, my wife and I make road trips that length a few times a year, so it is doable.
The real question will be: where along that path will it be clear on an hot summer afternoon in August, when many places have pop up clouds and showers.
I’ve got 3 3/4 years to think about that.

And, if I miss it, there is always 2024:

We could try Indonesia in 2016. My wife loves Indonesia. But, I hear it is cloudy there much of the time.

South America in 2020?

I’ve never been to South America…

Antartica in 2021?

That would be, excuse the expression, cool.

Maybe we should aim at off the cost of Iceland in 2015:

Problem is, we’d need a boat…

Hmm, I’m going to have to think about this some more…

Isn't it great that so many places around the world are at different times the best place to view these things. It's good we all take turns. :)

The sun and moon go over all of us.
And, that is a good thing!

I'd love to try Antarctica and/or Iceland!
