It’s the thought that counts?

As I’ve mentioned many times, I never really got along with my parents.
My father died 13 years ago, and I do my best to avoid my mother.
But, today in the mail was a card with her return address on it. Normally I just throw them in the trash unopened and unread.
Today I decided to see what she had sent for my 20th wedding anniversary.
It was a fairly bland “happy anniversary” card, which she had signed.
Inside was a letter she got from one of my father’s cousins that she just folded up again and put in the card.
And, a check for me for $20 and a check for my wife for $20.
I don’t know what’s up with that.
I get the 20 years $20. But, why send one to each of us? Because just $20 split between the two of us would be cheap?
I tore up the checks and tossed the bits with the card in the trash. Kept the letter from my father’s cousin as it has his email and I’ve always liked him.
