I received an email at the Phoenix Swords site today that was offering to boost our social media for money:


One of the things we try and avoid with our performance group is doing shows for free. So, it never occurred to me at all to pay people to be our fans and watch our videos.
One of us is doing it wrong.
I hope it's not me...

I think that there are probably more hollywood actors than you know who use this very sort of thing. It has become pretty popular with "cutting edge" PR companies to offer this service as part of a package, too - gives all those people in offices in China, Singapore, and Korea something to do.. literally, this is what they do - click on stuff for pennies per click!
