fbhjr: (Snowman)

They’ve been predicting this blizzard for several days. The channel 7 weather map has beens showing this since Wednesday.
The weather folks have been going on about how it may be one of the worst storms in history and who knows what will happen. Thunder snow, flooding, hurricane level winds and maybe even snow tornadoes. Maybe a meter or more of snow!

I have to admit, looking at the sky last night, I didn’t say “blizzard coming”.

The snow was supposed to start before 7 this morning.
But, at 7:30 it was still bare pavement at work.

About half the folks where I work didn’t come in because of the storm. I was assured over email by my boss working from home that it would start any minute.

By 9:30 there were a few flakes in the air.

By 10:30 I could actually see it on my car and against a dark background.

By 11:30 there was clearly some snow on the ground.

Two of my guys went out for lunch, so I had them bring me back a sandwich.

By 1 it was starting to get to a noticable amount.

So, about 1:30 I drove home.

As I climbed the hills towards where I live it did get deeper.

I only had trouble turning into our apartment complex. There was someone tailing me as I tried to do it, and a pedestrian in the lot in front of me as I started to slide on some snow.
I didn’t hit them, they didn’t hit me, and I didn’t slide much.
Good thing, it’s fairly steep.

The governor declared a state of emergency at 4PM and said it would be a $500 fine if you were out after that. So, I was happy to stay home.

It looks like more snow has fallen since then, but no where near what was feared.

The same weather person was on at 7PM as had been on at 6AM when I left this morning.
“We’re not going to get as much snow,” he said sadly. “There might still be 20” in the worst spots, but no where near the 30 to 40 the computer had said.
“And, no snow tornado. Only a little thunder snow, no more.”
He sounded very sad. But, he’s been talking about snow for 3 days, and at least 14 hours today.

I’m still glad no snow tornado.

Well I'm glad it wasn't as bad as they thought. I think it's interesting they fine people for being out in that weather. They must be pretty serious about not wanting to go out and rescue people. Surely people have common sense not to go out when it's really bad. (ok, maybe not)

Are there really tornados out of snow or is it just a figure of speech for a bad storm. I think the latter.

It's going to continue to snow for another 12 to 16 hours. So, when it is all said and done there could well be a lot of snow on the ground. But, most of it is tonight and they didn't have to cancel so much today.

They really meant a snow tornado. We've got a warm and cold front meeting with thunder (snow) storms. That can cause tornadoes if just the right conditions are met.
But, the cold it is, the less likely. And, it's pretty cold.
If it had stayed right above freezing as it was most of the day, we could have had a tornado in a snow storm.
