Falling apart
Jan. 28th, 2013 10:30 amLast week I popped the button off one of my shirts.
Today I found a big rip in an embarrassing part of my pants. Unlike the
shirt, I’m not worried that this is my being too fat as it isn’t on a seam
and is clearly a tear. I must have caught it on something going through
the factory and not noticed.
Good think I keep a sewing kit in my desk and that the handicapped stalls
in the bathroom give me enough room to work. (It is still a Frankenstein
job to pull the tears together. So, tonight when I get home I’ll toss the
pants in the trash. But at least for the rest of the day no one will be
able to tell the color of my underpants.)
In a similar thing, it appears my right shoe has started to fall apart.
Last week I noticed that if I stood on just my right foot on a smooth floor
it was make an “interesting” noise. Apparently that was the first sign of
the heal disintegrating. In retrospect I shouldn’t have had quite so much
fun at the morning staff meeting Friday making the noise.
I can’t blame the shoes. I buy very cheap shoes and they don’t last. But
given that they could spend the day on me sitting on my feet under my desk,
or be called upon to walk across the top of a freezer at -80C/-112F or,
climb up a gantry and over the tops of machines that are only at -4F/-20C
any shoe I wear is going to get destroyed fairly quickly. Even out of work
I’ve got to walk through snow, ice and salt put down to melt those things
fairly often this time of year and that kills them even faster. If that’s
the case, I don’t want it to happen to expensive shoes.
But, it is annoying when they all seem to fall apart together.
