I didn’t really like the Lord of the Rings movies.
Well, that’s not really accurate. I liked them less and less as they
progressed. The first one I do like a fair bit. The second one is OK and
the third is the one I really don’t like.
I don’t think it is just because I do like the books. I liked the Harry
Potter books, and still like the movies. (But, think the books are better.)
I just don’t like the changes they made to some of the characters. And,
the way they changed the ending takes away what I always thought was one of
the most important parts of the story.
That was the decision of the creative team that made the movie. I’m not
saying they’re wrong, or anything like that. Just that most of the things
I thought were the best parts of the story, they appear not to like. It’s
a matter of taste and these weren’t really to mine.

So, I’m worried about this Hobbit movie coming out today. I have a lot of
friends who seem to be very excited about it.
As a story I always liked the Hobbit more than LOTR.
Hope the movie is good.

I felt the same way about LotR. I think my patience wore thin after waiting to see the end for 3 years. I thought they were visually stunning, but the magic wore at when we finally reached number 3.

I will see the Hobbit as it is my Favorite book, but I hate the adding or changing of things just for marketings sake.I hope it can stand the 3 year wait test.

I'm told the biggest grip is with the "adding of things" by Jackson, but that it's still beautiful.

Yeah, the adding gets to me too...

I loved the Fellowship of the Rings (saw it 8 or 10 times in theaters), and liked the next two movies as well (although not as much). But the Hobbit movie? I'm all "Meh." I'll probably go see it. In a week or two. But I'm not lining up for tickets. And the only reason why i knew it was coming out this week was the sudden flurry of posts about it over on Facebook.

Fellowship is by far my favorite as well.

I agree that the first one of the LoTR series had the most impact - not only for the incredibly beautiful scenery and effects, but that the storyline was still pretty good - I never liked the whole Tom Bombadil detour anyway, but they did have to come up with some plot explanation of how they got weapons for all those little people. Anyhow, we are really looking forward to seeing the Hobbit (but not this weekend as we refuse to wait in long lines for movie tickets and don't want to fight the crowds). I think that it will be a good movie (I hope) but I also hope that Jackson's "fluffing it up" to (3) whole movies isn't going to ruin it.

A good friend of mine living in DC saw the movie last night and she said that she really liked it alot. It is LOOONG (2h 46min) so don't drink too much soda. Makes me wonder what he left for the remaining (2) installments....

How can you not like Tom Bombadil? He's the best part of the first book!
I've always thought it an important part of the story that it says that no matter how important you think your stuff is, there is someone who will never care about it. Even if they're a nice person and all that. They've just got other fish to fry.

Does it really take three movies to tell the story?

That one version of "Pride & Prejudice" was something like 5-6 hours and it still left stuff out... so yeah. I think most reasonably-length novels would probably need a minimum of 6 hours to be filmed accurately.

I don't want to divulge any spoilers, I will be interested to see what Fbhjr thinks of Hobbit once he sees it.

There is a lot of diverts to explain back story and circumstance that is only hinted at in the book
but that's all I'm going to say.

Visually stunning, absolutely. As much as total impact I felt with Fellowship and 2 Towers. I almost cried at the incredible scenery
and richness of the [artistic] feel.

There were some really ridiculous parts in Hobbit. Jesse and I made a few Star Wars references....But I'm trying to stay mum.

Overall, I did enjoy Hobbit, everyone who went seemed to also enjoy it, if we did pick a lot apart.
