The price of dreams
Nov. 28th, 2012 11:09 amAs
ticket for the $400,000,000 lottery to be held tonight.
No, I don’t expect to win. Even if I did I’m sure it would be one of those
freak things where everyone on the east coast won at the same time and my
share of the money would be less than the cost of the ticket.
That’s not the point.
It’s nice to think about what I’d do with all that money.
Because of that, I’m only willing to shell out the $1 or $2 for a ticket if
the jackpot is up over $100 million.
I had a friend once criticize me for that asking “a chance at a million
dollars isn’t worth $1 to you?”
No, it isn’t.
I’m not saying a million wouldn’t be nice. I’m sure it would be.
But, I’ve been working as an engineer for 26 ½ years. Technically, I’ve
made more than that. (At least before taxes.) So, why pay $1 to daydream
about what I’ve already got?
I’m not knocking what I’ve got in any way.
I’m just saying 400 million lets you have daydreams of building mansions,
buying planes, traveling the world or paying to go up to the space station.
That can be worth a dollar or two.
My guide for paying for those dreams is $1 per $100 million in prizes, but
never more than 1 ticket.
So, the $2 ticket one is up to $400 million?
That’s worth it.
I think I’ll paint my private jet with the Phoenix Swords logo…
