Back in 1990 I was laid off from the company where I worked as it went into
a death spiral.
I was out of work for 5 months. In that time I had to take my car off of
the road as I couldn’t keep it insured, move in with my (now) wife as I
couldn’t afford my own place and generally cut everything out of my life
that wasn’t part of find a new job.

After I had been out of work about 3 months, my mother told me she thought
I needed a new suit to go to interviews. The one I had was quite old and
not in great shape.
I told her I couldn’t afford that. She offered to buy it for me.

I had not yet finished paying her and my father back for college, which was
something she reminded me about weekly. So, I thought the offer out of
character. But, I couldn’t deny I needed a new suit, so agreed.

My (now) wife and I met my mother at a department store that had a wide
range of suits.
As the sales person waited on us, every time there was an option for the
suit, I suggested the less expensive one, but my mother insisted on the
more expensive version because “she was paying for it and wanted it to be
the best”. New suit, new pants, new shoes were all bought by her “to help
her son get a new job.”

As we walked out of the store with my new outfit, she turned to me and said
“I’ll add this total to the money you own me for college.” (I’m fairly sure
flame shot out of my wife’s eyes at this point.)
“What?” I asked. “You said you were paying for it and insisted on the
expensive stuff.”
“Well, I put it on my credit card,” she said. “But, I never intended to
give it to you as a gift.”
“You said you’d buy it for me!”
“And, I did. You just have to pay me back. Something you clearly don’t
care about doing with your other bills, but I’ll float you this until you
get back on your feet.”

A few years later I disowned her and my father. But, that’s another story.
