Last week we got the call from our patron down south who puts on the shows
in Pensacola and Mobile.
Usually it is one show in Pensacola in March and one in Mobile in November.
This year he tried to add a show in Pensacola in June. We opted not to go
to the June one. He got 17 inches of rain day one and only 15 inches of
rain day two.
So, instead of doing the usual Mobile faire in November, he opted to
reschedule the pirate show from June to November.

Up until last week it wasn’t clear if we were going to be asked to go to
that show. He lost a massive amount of money in the rain in June and was
planning on “mostly local talent”. As we are 1349 miles away, we’re not
really local.
But, he called. He wants us there. But, he can only pay $500, where he
usually pays $1500-$2000. Last year he paid us only $600 for the Mobile
show, but with the promise of more in March. This time there isn’t even
the promise. Only the “we’ll have a show in March, things should be
better”.
So, I told him only 1 car of people for that. Sword shows limited to our
historical show. Very minimal fire show. And, he agreed.
I am sorry we won’t be able to swing [livejournal.com profile] pallid_regina & [livejournal.com profile] hms_ennui this time as they added a whole lot to the show the last
two times. But, if he is paying us the least he ever has, he gets less
for it too.
(I do hear that a certain other group of sailors and drunks will be there
having chased the job on their own. But, they are doing their own shows,
not ours.)

Yesterday we had the meeting of the 4 of us going to see what we could do
for a show. It is 4 of the 6 “Whoop Nerds” so the options are better than
it would be if it was my wife, myself and two new folks.
(I do remember a time when folks would fight to go on these jobs down
south. I had to turn folks down due to lack of space or money. Now
filling one car is a challenge. How times change.

We will miss the chance to be with you guys, of course, but I think you're doing a really honorable thing by trying to figure out how to do the best show possible on a WAY more shoestring budget this year.

Yay for Whoop Nerds, seriously, that has GOT to be a load off your mind, planning-wise.
