This is in answer to the [livejournal.com profile] frozendoll meme I started earlier.

#16) Your worst illness

I have pretty good health. I get a cold or two a year, but that’s about it.

Other than physicals, my doctor visits have been due to throwing by back out, an aggressive arm lock that made me worry about a heart attack, and a hiatal hernia.

My doctor worries about skin cancer on my all the time due to my fair skin and my spending lots of time outdoors on the weekends.
There was one point she thought there might be something and I went for lots of tests. It turned out to be my allergy to metals acting up because of the metal in my sunglasses. I was very relieved about that.

The summer between 6th and 7th grade I had the chicken pox and missed a week of summer camp. I was very sad about this as it was the first year I had actually wanted to go to summer camp and had not been forced to do so.
I remember that as being the first time I had zero sleep in a night as the pain from it was too much for me to sleep.

There was another time in college when what we called “The Dread Disease” went through our social group.
To this day I don’t know what it was. But, when you had it you felt fine for 55 minutes and then for 5 you threw up. What you did or did not eat had no bearing on it. It got to the point that we just drank ginger ale as it tasted the least bad coming the other way.
After 24 hours of this, you were over it.
Everyone we knew got it. I was one of the first. I got it from one roommate who brought it in from where he worked.

I’m not sure which would be worse.
I am very glad there has been nothing else on that list for the last 30 or so years and I very much hope it continues that way.

My actual worst was one I don't remember; apparently I almost died of bronchitis- and then a sulpha allergy- when I was about 18 months old. My parents had apparently watched me increasingly suffocate and only brought me to the hospital when I was at death's door. And then the treatment nearly killed me, too.

The worst I remember, though, was pretty minor though awful: I had a full case of norovirus over Xmas a few years ago. It was several days before I could think of eating without barfing, and had a long recovery. Still- a pretty minor illness.
