Dream of beaches and sharks

I dreamed my wife and I were going to the beach. It was in a city somewhere in California, but I’m not sure which one. There was a wall that ran along the high tide mark and a big boardwalk area over that. On the inside of the wall a swimming area was made under the boardwalk level.
But, my wife and I wanted to swim in the real ocean. We walked along the boardwalk to the wall and climbed down a ladder to the beach.
The beach was only a few feet wide in the curve of the sea wall. The curve was only about 20 feet long, so it was a very tiny beach. There were a few other people there and a push cart. The ground was mostly pebbles with a few larger rocks. The water was very still and clear.
We started to wade into the water when the person at the push cart handed me a sheet of what seemed like construction paper.
“For the sharks,” they told me.
My wife and I had not expected sharks.
We waded out until the water was about half way up our shins. I could see the bottom. I didn’t see any fish, much less sharks. But it did worry me.
“I think that’s a great white shark,” my wife said.
I looked out at the water trying to see it.
“Where?” I asked as I saw nothing but water.
“Chewing on my foot,” she answered.
As I started to turn I had enough awareness that this was a dream to think “this better not be a dream where a huge shark has somehow managed to get in the shallow water”.
I turned and my wife was standing in the water normally, I could see her feet on the bottom. I didn’t see anything chewing on them.
“The water is too shallow for an adult great white,” I told her. “Maybe some young ones are swimming between your toes.”
I took the construction paper shark shield and pushed it into the water in an arc around her foot until it hit bottom.
“Did that stop it?” I asked.
“No. I think I’ve had enough.”
We walked the foot or two back to shore. I still saw nothing in the water.
My wife climbed up the ladder to the boardwalk level. When I tried the ladder broke loose and dropped to the beach. I looked and the top had been held on with plastic string.
I hooked the top rung over the post at the top of the wall and climbed up.
Dream ends

Thank you and Laura for having us up for a visit. It was a very nice time. Swimming is cool too, but the visiting is the reason for the drive.
