Play the icon game

I got this from my wife

Other people are supposed to have me ask them about theirs too.
Splash
The weekend after my wife left me last summer, we did a pirate faire in
Maine. In more than 5 years of Phoenix Swords, it was our first job in
Maine, the only hold out New England state.
I wasn’t really into the performance that weekend. I was upset, angry,
hurt, worried, etc.
But, the performance went really well. It was a fantastic show. The
people running it had a pirate ship that they had sail into harbor and fired
at the town. (Blanks) And, they had cannon on the shore fire back. (Again
blanks.)
All of us there agreed it was the coolest pirate show we had ever seen.
But, no one had been shot and fell into the water.
So, naturally, I volunteered to do that for day 2.
As we were getting ready, I turned to
![[livejournal.com profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/external/lj-userinfo.gif)
“Have I gone from just being depressed to outright suicidal to have
volunteered for this?”
He said:
“Frank, you’re a gigantic ham. You want to be more involved in the show,
or outright steal it if you can. This is your way to do that. You’d do
the same not matter what.”
Not everyone understands me that well, and I appreciated it.
The pirate ship sailed in. We stood on the dock. The battle started. I
wasn’t shot at.
The captain of the ship was standing over me on the deck.
“Aren’t you supposed to shoot me?” I asked him.
“Oh, I will,” he said. He then proceeded to take out (what appeared to me
to be) a huge blunderbuss and pointed it at me. I didn’t so much get shot
into the water as jump in to get away from it as it fired. (Gunpowder
tests would probably still show it embedded into my skin now, 7 months
later.)
The picture is of the splash I made hitting the water.
To me it has a bunch of different meanings. Any of them could be what I’m
thinking when I use it.
1) Even in the midst of really bad things, I’m still me.
2) I AM a big ham, and love to steal the show.
3) If I see something fun going on, I feel the need to be involved
4) Fun is out there to be had, even if you aren’t expecting it
5) Even fun things can leave you floating in the cold ocean water with your
shoes filling up.
Tardis Key
I’ve loved the Doctor Who TV show for decades. I first started watching it
in the mid-1970’s when my sister was home for a couple of weeks.
“We’re going to watch this show I’ve heard about,” she said. “I think
we’ll like it.”
It turned out to be “Robot” the first Tom Baker episode. I’ve watched it
ever since.
The show went on the air two weeks after I was born. It’s had ups and
downs. It’s been cancelled more than once.
But, it has kept going. TV shows, books, audio dramas, and starting a
couple of years ago, back on the air. 10 different people have played the
lead, not counting the others in the 2 movies, the stage shows or the
parodies.
Although I’ve been a Science Fiction fan since my sister let me stay up and
watch the original Star Trek with her when she was home from college in the
60’s, this show has always had a special place for me. (And, thousands of
others too.)
Part of it is the idea that we started about the same time. Sort of a
check for me like Winny the Pooh talking to himself in the mirror. “You
still there?” “Yeah.” “Good, me too.”
Part of it is that it is one of the many things I like my sister introduced
me to. (Along with Star Trek, Lord of the Rings, shopping, etc.)
Part of it is the premise of the show. Exiled from his people. Traveling
anywhere in time or space. Picking up interesting people along the way.
Fighting evil, trying to save people, trying to make the universe a better
place.
One Christmas more than 25 years ago, my sister gave me a copy of the Tom
Baker era key as a present. I still have it. The icon is a picture of it
in my hand.
Part of me hopes that some day I’ll find a lock it fits, and get a Tardis.
Not likely, is it?
As with the splash, I used for a bunch of reasons:
1) When I talk about the past.
2) When I talk about Science Fiction.
3) When I’m thinking about things I’d like to change in the past.
Dagger
When practicing for the Mobile Ren Faire last fall, we had extra practices
at the basketball court of our apartment complex.
As I enjoy doing, I would throw the dagger trying to get it to stick in the
ground. As with many things I like (including pool, archery, bowling, most
video games), liking it is not enough to make me good at it. (I was
tossing it pretty high up too…)
One time it landed hilt down and stuck in that way. That got most people
who saw it laughing about it.
I wanted an icon for my Phoenix Swords stories. So, I took the picture and
used that.
It’s a dagger I’ve had for years. Used in many different fight
performances. And, as usual, it doesn’t work out quite as I expected, but
the audience approved.
Perfect for Fenix…
Fireball
This is one of

Phoenix Swords. It’s actually from one of his practice ones last fall.
I’ve been told I flame people.
I thought I should have an icon for that.
I’ve also used it for some things that I thought were hot.
