Last night I couldn’t sleep.  My right big toe is still a bit numb from the
boot/washout problem we had 2 months ago, the tooth I had worked on last
month is still bothering me some.

That sort of thing always makes me think: If I could go off to a fictional
universe to get my medical problems dealt with, where would I go?
And, as long as I’m dimension jumping anyhow, where would be a good place
to retire.

The clear winner for both, as least for me, is the Culture in the Ian M
Banks books.  But, more people know the various TV places.  So, I thought
I’d ask you about those.

Where would you want to live?
Where would you want to work?
Where would you want to get your health care?

For me, I’d go to the doctors on Satellite Five (before the Daleks get
there) and probably live on Earth of the later Star Trek franchises.
Except for one Breen attack, that seems like a pretty good place.  Forget
the colonies, they are always being attacked, hit by plague or revolting
against things.

Seriously, Logan's Run? You DO remember that everyone was reborn killed on their 30th birthday, don't you? Not a great retirement community. =0

Ah, but in the short lived TV show of the 70's there were lots of places outside the domes where the 30 year limit was not in force.
Or, so I'm given to understand. I used to watch the San Pedro Beach Bums instead. My sister told me it was therefore my fault Logan's Run was cancelled.

Can't say that I even knew there was a TV show. But from what I remember of the movie (and I'm realizing now it's been ages since I watched it, must add to NetFlix queue!), the places outside the domes were pretty much wilderness.

When I'm a little old lady, I'm going to want my modern conveniences. And those tree roots are sure to snag my walker and trip me. So no Logan's Run world for me!

I'd still take over the Terminator world...

There were lots of other folks in the TV show:

It had even more episodes than the show I watched:

I'm sure you're right- it's been years since I read it.

I'd like to live with the Kesh in "Always Coming Home". Or maybe one of the future societies in "Woman at the Edge of Time" (though I haven't re-read that in ages).

The 3 ages of 7 years each made more sense that the movie with 4 of 7 1/2 each.

And, i tried to stick to TV shows. Granted a bunch of the based on movies.

Despite planet Zice, I don't think of that as Science Fiction.

hm. fantasy, then? just curious, cause i definitely think the living forever part is unlikely, head-chop or no head-chop (well, certainly if head is chopped).

I thought of it as more fantasy as the immortality thing seems far more magic than science or tech.

The LAST place I would want to live, however, is Westros (Game of Thrones). Yeesh.

Frankly I'd rather live on a fantasy world

Quite a few of these have significantly more bleak long term outlook and greater propensity of death, so I'd opt for either Star Trek or Star Wars - I think that STar Wars might actually be more interesting because they certainly have very exciting & dangerous stuff (pod racing, etc.) whereas most times the ST team relies on a holodeck for that sort of thing. But, I think I could have a good life in either universe - but if I was counting on top notch medical care in my old age I'd have to lean toward the doctors on Star Trek - if they could bring me back from being devolved into a lungfish I'm sure that they could fix anything I might come down with..

Why?
It's the most peaceful option of the bunch. As much as I love Firefly, I don't want to live in that universe.

Although it seems nice in the core worlds.
But, I agree, not my first choice.

If your tooth is still bothering you, you should go back to the dentist. I've had horrible pain from having a newly-filled or newly-crowned tooth just a TEENY bit too high- it's amazing how painful that can be.
