[Poll #1163550]

I can’t wear metal.
No rings, not watches, no piercing, earrings etc.
My skin breaks out with any prolonged contact with metal. I’m given to understand it is the nickel in the metal that does this and is not uncommon.
So, one of the results is that I have not been able to wear a wedding ring.
Many years ago, my wife stopped wearing hers. Although she was also getting a skin reaction, one of her reasons was “you don’t, why should I?”
For work I needed to get some 7/8” O-rings to hold a lock in place. That’s just about the diameter of my finger. These are made of an FDA food approved grade rubber. I may be able to have that against my skin. (May not too. Don’t know.)
The question is, should I?
Should I wear this as a wedding ring?
It’s not the non-rusting gold. It’s only $0.28 of rubber.
It will wear out, but I can buy more if I have to.
I’m just not sure if it is a stupid idea or not.
Opinions?

Rings

I had to go with platinum.
So far so good.
Apparently many of the common gold rings are made with reclaimed gold from X-rays. It makes me break out.
I've had good luck with Virgin (non-reclaimed) gold too.

It's not just gold for me. Anything with nickel. That includes Stainless Steel, which most watch backs are made from.
So, unless very pure (and therefore soft) gold, I don't think it would help.
But, I appreciate the options.

What about palladium? I understand that it is the alloying metal in White Gold, and it is less likely to cause a contact dermatitus than nickel.

Yeah, I've thought of that. The problem with that is the cost of experimentation.

Does it come in colors? One for different attire. Really if it bothers you, go for it.

Random thought... what about a non-metal band? made from stone? I was thinking of this way back when i saw stone-formed rings from hematite. I don't know if hematite would set off a reaction but maybe there are other stones that can be made into a suitable ring?

I thought of that too. But, I have big fingers, and stone tends to be thick. I haven't seen one that both fits and lets me come close to closing my fingers if I need to.

Well, at first I thought daft, but the allergy certainly is worse.

Is it possible to get a ring with a liner made for the inside? Or some sort of lacquer coating to prevent direct contact?

I tried that with watches, back when I tried to wear them. They wore off or fell off and I didn't always notice until I got the rash. So, I wasn't big on that one.

Heh...

It's too bad we're not allowed to wear swords on our person anymore, I think having your ring, or some jewel to act as such, set into the hilt of your sword, would be really spifferific

I have seen some stone rings, often of hematite - they do tend to be kinda large/thick and would probably break under conditions like getting smacked with a sword hilt, etc. How about some sort of necklace type thing - can you wear a leather or synthetic cord against you skin, perhaps with a stone attached ? Or, there are alot of body-piercing, etcs. that are made with resins or polymers/acrilycs that are pretty tough - perhaps something could be made (perhaps a custom made design) that would look like a metal ring, but perhaps be even more cool, different colors (green, blue, etc.) ? something to investigate perhaps.

I don't know if my input is valid - I HAD a platinum wedding ring, and had my wife's wedding and engagement rings custom made of platinum - my ring was an "off the shelf" item. I have managed to lose the @#$%^ ring (actually lost it almost 2 years ago, blowing/plowing snow, I believe) and I have never found it. At some point, I'll have to look into buying a replacement...and the price of platinum hasn't gone down either !

I had originally thought of anodized aluminum, but can't find any ring shaped objects the right size to fit my fingers....

Titanium

Titanium is another option, vice platinum.

There are actually a couple of companies that make titanium rings with gold inlay on the "away from Frank" side....

You are right - I noticed a company on the web - boone rings dot com that has
some very nice looking products, stylish and unique, and they work in other metals too - the engineer in me is very intrigued.....

Oh, I bet a mechanical engineer knows at least some guys who work in or run machine shops ?!? I am sure that you could find a shop that would turn a ring on a CNC out of 6160 Aluminum alloy, though anodizing it again would
require more expense, etc. unless they just tossed it into the chamber with other parts that were being anodized. Titanium would be great, though it would be more of a challenge to find a machine shop that would work with it.
I guess it is all a matter of how much are you willing to spend.

Hematite is psychically volatile. It's supposed to help calm people down and be soothing, but it makes me wildly insane and angry. (Someone gave me a bracelet of hematite and it was gorgeous, but for weeks I wanted to kill all of humanity. Took it off and gave it away. All returned to normal.)

Your mileage may vary.

Nickel makes my son break out too. Where the back of his jeans button rubs on his belly it a huge red rash. We tape over the button back or paint it with nail polish. Maybe a plastic lining of some sort?
