At our weekly engineering meeting, my boss asked if anyone is going to take
time off around the holidays.
At least half the people in the room said next Thursday.
Not next Friday, which would give a 4 day weekend.  But, just a Thursday
off in the middle of the week.

I know there is that whole Mayan prophecy of doom for 12/21/12.  But, this
is 12/22/11.
Were they off a year?  Is that why everyone is in a hurry to be home with
their family on that day?  The calendar was made thousands of years ago.
Maybe they started with year 0 instead of year 1.
Either way, I also hope to be with family that day.  (OK, family and
alligators.)
I’ll have to keep an eye out.

This of course led to a question of where you would want to be if it was
the end of the world.
I said home if it is by flood as I live on a hill and that would give me a
bit more time.  (I know, I know, promises were made for no more floods.
I’m just saying where I would pick if it was a flood.  And, let’s face it.
Noah could well have been a bit tipsy when the promise was made.  Maybe it
was not heard quite right.  If I see a big wave, I’m going up hill.)
I said work if it is by fire as I can climb in the freezer and get some
more time that way.
Of course there was the debate of the -4F freezer or the -112F freezer.
That depends on the fire.  Normal fire, -4.  Nukes, -112F.  Hey a bank
vault survived Hiroshima.  It would be worth a try if I got enough warning.

I hope it isn’t rain.  It certainly won’t take 40 days in FL.

Are they thinking that they're already getting Friday off as a holiday since Christmas is on a weekend this year? My company is getting Monday off, maybe yours is getting Friday off for Christmas?

Nope, we're getting Monday too.
And that was pointed out.

As near as I can figure, folks are picking that day for their Christmas shopping because they think Friday will be too crowded.
Of course, if everyone thinks the same way...

Maybe that's what the Mayans were thinking. "This the last good shopping day!"

OK, that's just weird.

And when I worked retail, there was nothing we hated worse than those people who put off all their shopping until the very last possible minute. =(
