It is good to know it’s not my fault

I called the Department of Motor Vehicles today about my license. Or,
rather, my lack of one.
I had almost driven over to the office here in town. When I was out at
lunch I put on the directional to go there, and then changed my mind.
“They’re not going to be able to help me,” I said to myself. “They’re
going to say that has to be done at the main office in Boston. I should
just go back to the office and call the main office.”
So, that is what I did.
After making sure that absolutely no automated choice in their phone system
covered what I wanted, I punched the zero key until the robo-operator said:
“I can see you really want to talk to someone. I will connect you with our
next available agent.”
While I waited the 34 minutes on hold, I pondered how many people must have
taken to punching the zero key over and over for them to have recorded that
in the messages.
Finally I got through.
“I renewed my license on line back in October,” I explained when asked what
had led me to call. “It still hasn’t arrived and has been more than 5
weeks. I wanted to check and see what was up with that.”
“Let me see,” the man on the other end of the phone said. He took my
information and waited.
“Yes, you did renew on October 25th,” he said. “The address you just gave
me matches the one here 100% so there is no reason it wouldn’t have
arrived.”
“Yet, it has not,” I said.
“We should have sent it by now.”
“I feel the same way.”
“Let me request it to be sent to you again,” he said.
“I would appreciate that.”
“Is there anything else you need?” he asked.
“The email confirmation you sent me of my renewal said it is good for 30
days in place of my license. It has been 36. I am somewhat worried about
now being considered to be driving illegally.”
“I can see how that would bother you,” he said. “You can go to any DMV
office and they can give you an extension on the temporary license. You
could have gone there to look into why we didn’t send you the license, but
they would have just told you to call me anyhow.”
“Somehow, I had sensed that.”
“Well, your new license should be in the main soon. I am very sorry we
didn’t manage to send it to you sooner. Perhaps we did mail it and the
post office just didn’t deliver it.”
“They have been in a bit of a snit lately,” I agreed. “But, I have
received quite a bit of other mail.”
“I guess it is our fault. The new one will go right out.”
“Thank you for the help,” I said.
I am surprised they admit fault. I had been worried that I would have been
told I had to pay for a replacement or something like that.
Of course, it isn’t here yet. So, we’ll see.
