Learner’s permit

It was 16 years ago today that my wife went to the Saturn dealership in
Worcester and picked out the car I drive now.
She had been without a car for almost 6 months. Christmas Eve 1994 there
was a big wind storm and one of the trees in our apartment complex blew
over and broke her old Ford in half. We both hated that Ford, so there
wasn’t a lot of tears shed over that.
At the time I worked days and she worked nights, so we could share a car
for a while without too much difficulty.
But, she did need her own car. I had been driving a Saturn for two years
at that point and was really happy with it.
That was back when Saturn was fairly new and they were still working under
their “different” business model. I liked that back then. I went over to
the sales person who had sold me my Saturn 2 years before. He remembered
me and was very helpful in getting my wife the car she wanted. I was
really sad when they turned it into a normal car company. And, I guess I’m
not the only one as their sales dropped through the floor and they went out
of business.
I remember thinking when she got the 7 year/100,000 mile warrantee option
“we’ll never see that”, but it has long since broken both of those numbers.
So, now that it is 16, it is old enough to get a learner’s permit and start
driving itself around.
Personally I think that’s great. I can sit back and let it drive.
Of course, I’ll have to teach it to drive. It’s been a while since I’ve
given anyone driving lessons.
But, I’ve done it before for plenty of people, how much more difficult can
it be for a car that has already been driving around 16 years?
It will be great when it finally gets its license. I can sent it off on
errands. It won’t be able to go to the grocery store for me, but the bank,
pharmacy and fast food places are all drive through!
My only worry is that, like many teenagers, it will get rebellious.
But, I can always take away the keys, right?
Besides, it’s been a very good car for the first 16 years. I’m sure it
will continue to be good, even once it gets its license.

The larger problem is when the car starts dating other cars...Or SUV's....Or Semi Trucks...Or...Those Rebellious Motorcyles
