Not Dumas, but dumb ass

My wife’s coupe, which is the car I drive the most often, is reasonably old
for a car. Next month will be 16 years since she got it. It only has
168,000 miles on it, which is pretty good for 16 years.
Like all 4 Saturn’s we’ve owned, as it gets up in mileage it takes oil more
often. (This may be true of all cars, but of the cars we’ve owned only
Saturns have broken the 150,000 limit, and all 4 did.)
This weekend on our trip to CT and back it was making its “I’d like some
oil soon” noise. I thought that was early for it as I had put oil in it
not too long ago. But, I reasoned that more highway time then it was used
to might have done it.
This morning when I popped the hood I found the real reason.
Last time I put in oil I did not put the oil cap back on. It was sitting
there totally open as it had apparently been for the last couple of weeks
and few hundred or so miles.
My first worry was what to do about it. I didn’t want to keep driving
around that way, but the auto part stores weren’t open yet.
Then, I saw the oil cap sitting on the battery where I had put it last time
I put in oil. Apparently the coupe’s engine compartment is so small that
when I closed the hood it was wedged there and remained there the whole
time.
I hate it when I’m stupid. But, I’m thankful when I’m lucky.
This time I was both.
Now if I can just keep the lucky and dump the stupid…
