Adventures in Louisville
Jul. 3rd, 2010 07:40 pmMy wife and I got our rental car in Louisville about 10AM yesterday. The smallsword demo was at 10:45 at the Frasier museum.
“We can make that!” I said. “It’s less than 10 miles. Even with parking, we should have the time.”
What we forgot:
Route 65 is the highway of “Bam!”.
Yes, I usually experience it in Alabama between Montgomery and Mobile.
But, it is the same highway and it happens all along its length.
So: Bam!

We never found out what had caused the accident. But, we know about 6 police cars, two fire trucks and at least one ambulance responded, closing 2 out of 3 lanes.
We did not get to the Frasier in time.
Sad.
But, the Frasier is a very interesting museum with an excellent collection. Good enough that I’m going to make what went on there a separate entry and talk about the rest of the city we saw now.
We found parking under this park. You’d think that would happen more. Park/park. But, it doesn’t usually work out that way.

They have some funky buildings along Main Street in Louisville.

I was born in Boston and spent a lot of time when young there. So I dove right in crossing streets in Louisville. My wife was not all that happy about that. But, I did get a nice picture of her in front of the fountain from the other side of the street.

This building seemed to be very Egyptian to me. Big columns. Water flowing down them. Granted the torches are little fountains, but I think the effect is still the same.

Along main street there are sculptures of various sorts sitting on the sidewalk.

I’m not sure if this is art or an abandoned building. OR, both!

I am also not sure about this car.

This is the biggest bat I’ve ever seen.

Their chickadees also seem very large, if not as large as the bat.

There was a nice park dedicated to the founding of the city.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a squirrel drinking before. I’m sure they all do it. I just don’t think I’ve seen it before, despite growing up with them all over the place.

The science museum right along main has a very big mirror out front.

What would I use is a mirror like that?

Who voted “death ray”?

It seemed like there were a bunch of “crimson penguins” around.

Every time I looked up, more and more of them were gazing down at me.

After I checked out the mirror, a whole lot of them showed up.

My guess is they are the protectors of the city and want no more death rays.
But, that’s only a theory.
Either way, we left town.

Checked into our hotel.

And left for Shelbyville.

Just a couple of notes.
1) Without meaning to knock it in any way, I thought the University of Kentucky would be bigger.

2) When we got to the hotel, I got out to register. As I walked into the lobby, I realized I had left my wallet in the car.
“Can I help you, sir?” The man at the counter asked.
“I’ve got to go back for my wallet, but I’ve got a room in the name of Hunt,” I said, then went back to the car.
When I came back, I apologized to him for running off like that.
“No problem,” he said. “My life would be a lot easier if more guests shouted their name from the door and let me do all the computer work without hovering over me.”
So, maybe it will start a trend...
