So, the headhunter I met with yesterday seemed to be really competent and excited about getting me this job in Oxford. He is friends with their lead engineer and is in an excellent position to get me an interview at the minimum.
But, he found out today, another headhunter put my name in first.

This is one of the issues dealing with headhunters. To keep you from going to the company directly, they don’t tell you who they are working with. They tell you the product and a vague location to make sure you’re willing to do the commute.
So, you can have two people working on the same thing and not know it.

I hadn’t known this was going on in this case, but am not happy about it. Companies go with a first come first serve basis for this stuff, and the other guys got in first.
I wish the guys with the good connections had gotten there first.

And, this may well hurt my chances. If the guy who is friends with the guy hiring isn’t going to get a commission out of this...

Pisser.

Not much I can do about it at this point. And, not much I could have done about it at all.
Sad.

Id say it sounds more like your chances are better if two seperate headhunters put you in for the same position. Its kinda like an impartial reference. They assesed you have the best chances at getting that job based on pure awesome (and possibly some other factors as well). In contrast to the given references by yourself who should inherantly like you right? Either way lets hope that the company in oxford pits the two headhunters together in an all out fight to the death for who gets the commision!

Going back through my records now that I know what company they are talking about, I did find the second one and they were a week after the one I met yesterday. So, I'd still think the one from yesterday (with its better contacts) would win.

But, given the hundreds if not thousands of engineers on the market these days, it think it is far more likely the company will say "we'll just pick someone else" then deal with a fight between two headhunters...

To quote my friend Mike at work "I'm sure it will work itself out". I would not be suprised if one of the two just lowers his percentage a micron under the others just for the final push. Those headhunters are wiley =)

That assumes they really want to hire me. And, I'm not at all sure that's true.

Good luck. You could win by gee, I don't know the fact that you would be good for the job. :)

so from my experience as hiring manager, the 'fight' between headhunters doesn't exist. The hiring manager knows who came first and that's the end of it. Really, it's not about the headhunter. It's about the resume and meeting the job qualifications. If either of these guys know their jobs, you've already been vetted as qualified. Glass half-full, you'll get the interview and a chance to strut your stuff.
