So, I’ve set myself some projects.
Yesterdays, which I failed to complete, was to get all my paperwork for being out of work done and finished.
I probably should have picked one that didn’t depend on bureaucracies for the first one I wanted to finish.
But, I set off. As a bunch of things are fairly local, I walked a lot yesterday. And, doing so I saw some stuff that made me think about my situation.
First, next to our bank for as long as we’ve lived in Shrewsbury (15+ years) there has been a Blockbuster video store.
But, now it is closed.

The tattered Blockbuster flag at half mast really seemed to sum it up for me.
On the way home, I walked past a tax preparation company. With April 15th coming up, this is their big time of year. So, they’ve hired a woman to stand outside in a Statue of Liberty costume and wave at people driving by.

Now I’ve been paid to dress in a gorilla suit, so I’m not saying I don’t understand this. I’m just saying, I hope it never comes back to that for me.
Today I did finish one of my smaller projects.

Folks who haven’t been to our apartment will probably say “so what?”
Well, it took 4 large garbage bags not to mention what it took for the printer. (Printer wasn’t much good anyhow. I just wish it didn’t weight almost 100 pounds...)
This is on top of applying to a dozen or so places already. Everyone who has sent me ideas, thanks! I’ve been using them!

Date: 2009-04-05 02:12 pm (UTC)Hey, for what it's worth, and that's probably not much, I just came across this page this morning: http://money.cnn.com/magazines/fortune/bestcompanies/2009/full_list/
They seem to be rating the companies on how financially solvent they are, among other things.
Keep up the positive spirit and the good work! I think you're handling this amazingly well. I hope I can do so well when I inevitably get laid off. They're actually having committee meetings at BU to decide what to do with their I.T. staff...

Date: 2009-04-05 02:54 pm (UTC)I had seen this coming. They had been doing layoffs since last summer and I knew engineering would get hit eventually. And, of the folks in the department, I knew I was going to be the first.
So, my wife and I had a plan in place already when it happened.
I can't say I'm happy about it. Or, that I wish it hadn't come to that. But, it wasn't a surprise and they were much nicer to me than other places that have done it in the past.
As they say, hope for the best, plan for the worst.
I'm sorry to hear your job might have similar problems. Sadly there are very few places that are safe these days. If you work in IT, then that is something that has a wide range of use. So, that's good.
Thank you for the list of companies. Every little bit helps.
