Pettiness from beyond the grave!
Jan. 2nd, 2026 05:03 pmMy cousin Diane wrote to me today to say she was horrified to find my mother’s obituary neglected to list my wife on the list of surviving relatives even if it listed her siblings, my cousins (well, only on my mother’s side), and her remaining in-laws.
I assured her it is what my mother would have wanted.
After all up until Christmas 2024, she was sending my wife cards addressed to her name before we got married.
Nothing like being married 31 years and having your mother in law still denying you’ve joined the family.
Diane assured me she had not left it off and would have it fixed. I guess it was based on my father’s obituary from 25 years ago.
So, my mother got two jabs at my wife through the same effort, one from past her death.
There is no doubt my mother was persistent.
Some folks have questioned my saying she died on my wife’s birthday on purpose.
According to what my brother and cousin have told me, they showed up to visit my mother. My brother explained I didn’t join them as it was my wife’s birthday, and my mother died soon after.
Yes, she was 94, not doing well and not expected to make it much longer.
I doubt she even knew what day it was. Until my brother reminded her.
And, my mother is the person who delayed her wedding to hold it on her sister’s birthday.
So, not exactly out of character.
But, I’m probably giving her too much credit.
I suspect she’d have been happy these things worked out this way.
But, I doubt she actually had the ability to make it happen.
