I think this is one of our most undervalued holidays! Why is there no parade? Why is there no Air Force flyover? How many other rodent based holidays are there? (Mickey's working on it, I'll grant you that...)
I think that G-Hog day is an american secularization of what used to be an old, but often overlooked religious holiday, Candlemas Day (Feb 2). The Germans (of which there are quite a few in Pennsylvania) had a proverb using a badger instead of a groundhog predicting the remaining length of winter on that day.
