Types of audience
Apr. 18th, 2023 02:22 pmOver the years Phoenix Swords has done over 400 shows and the audiences have varied wildly.
We have classified the audiences into several groups:
Class 1: The audience is interested specifically in the things you’re doing, has a knowledge and appreciation of it and can get more rare or obscure references.
This is a rare kind of audience. We love them. It’s our favorite kind.
Class 2: The audience has a general interest in the type of show you do, but not specifically in your material. This is the type of show we get a ren faires. They’re OK with sword fighting in general, but didn’t come there specifically for that.
This is probably our most common type.
Class 3: The audience is not interested in the type of thing you do, but not specifically against it either. When we perform at state or town faires, or things like that, it is generally this class. The gaming convention this coming weekend will almost certainly be a class 3.
Class 4: The audience has no interest in what you do and no interest in finding out about it. At best they are indifferent and might actually consider you an annoyance preventing them from doing/seeing what they are interested in. They are often heckling or at least somewhat unpleasant to you.
We’ve only faced a class 4 a few times. It’s never good. Once we did win one over, that was good.
Class 5: openly hostile to you.
Well, we have swords and they usually don’t. So, it rarely goes past 4.
I don’t like 3 or higher.
And, this weekend I’m sure is going to be a 3. Hopefully not more.
We’ll see how it goes…
