Dream dog

Last night I dreamed I went home to the house I grew up in.
In the dream it was not the fairly small house I knew, but some sort of venue for events with big rooms full of round tables that seat 8 or more people.

I had some sort of work I needed to do there, so my mother said she’d leave me to it and go to another room.
My old dog Ben was there and seemed very happy to see me. As he died 26 years ago, I was happy to see him too.

I took my work over to one of the big tables and started to work on it. Ben sat under the table on my feet and fell asleep.

It took me a while to do my work, but I eventually finished.
As I got up, I noticed Ben didn’t move. I bent down to check on him and realized he had died.
While sad, I was happy that I had some additional time with him.

I picked up his body and carried it into the next room where my mother was.
“Ben passed away,” I said, holding up his body.
“Ah well, throw that away,” she said.
I turned and took the body away, determined to do something more than throw it in the trash.

I remember just before my mother had him put to sleep I went home and visited him one last time.
My father got quite mad about it.
“You won’t visit us, but you will visit the dog?” He asked.
“The dog lived with you 18 years,” I said. “I only made it 17 before I moved out. I’ve got to show the dog respect.”
I didn’t say “the dog never called me an embarrassment to the family like you did”, but I held that back…

Anyhow, I’m happy to see my dog again, even if only for a little while…

18 years is an extremely respectable age for a dog!
